Veterinary Technician
The Veterinary Technician (Vet Tech) will support and assist research/clinical fellows (Researchers) in the Tearney Research Laboratory in the Wellman Center for Photomedicine in the conduct of in vivo animal studies and ex vivo imaging of human and animal tissue in support of various research programs. The division between these responsibilities will be based on research needs.
The primary responsibility is related to animal-related research. The Tearney Laboratory has an active animal schedule with over 50 large animals scheduled per year distributed over several diverse animal studies with the majority being non-survival studies. The Vet Tech be responsible for assisting Tearney Laboratory research teams with pre-procedure/surgical preparations, day-of-procedure activities, and post-procedure animal care responsibilities, when appropriate. The Vet Tech will provide routine animal health monitoring, notification of CCM staff to protocol-dependent specialized animal care and serve as a primary responder to CCM Staff and Veterinary-related issues associated with advanced medical and surgical procedures. Demonstrated ability preferably or willingness to learn endoscopic procedures is desired including maintenance of consoles and a variety of endoscopes. They may be responsible for scheduling surgical procedures, managing and providing treatment for post-operative care cases and health assessment/health assurance programs for swine but also including mice, rats, and rabbits. Ability and willingness to collect tissues at necropsy is required. Duties also include data processing and archiving of endoscopic and optical images from in vivo imaging studies as well as contributing to the writing and maintenance of IACUC protocols in coordination with Researchers.
Familiarity with the regulatory requirements as outlined in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and Animal Welfare Act is a part of the position’s responsibilities.
A secondary responsibility will be to assist researcher staff in conducting human and animal tissue imaging ex vivo. The Vet Tech will be responsible for assisting Researcher staff in the preparation of tissue specimens for imaging on novel microscopes and preparation for subsequent histological processing.
Principle Duties & Responsibilities:
Working Conditions:
The majority of the time will be spent in a traditional laboratory setting including exposure to chemical agents and BL1/BL2 materials. The Vet Tech will also spend time in surgical operating rooms and animal care facilities. Specifically, employees may be exposed to BL1/BL2 biological materials, chemicals, laser light, heat, and animal waste products. The duration of exposure to any of the above is dependent on the assigned duties. Some aspects of this position may expose the incumbent to potentially fatal zoonotic diseases. Appropriate protective clothing and equipment may be required and will be provided when required, accompanied by appropriate training.
Skills & Competencies Required:
Education:
Some college or Associate’s Degree required.
Certifications:
CVT or LAT preferred.
Experience:
One year of veterinary care experience post degree and experience with a variety of animal species preferred.

- Assist research staff in the conduct of animal experiments which require complex coordination and planning, including other personnel and collaborators.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate veterinary care for his/her assigned responsibilities.
- Demonstrated ability or willingness to learn endoscopic procedures.
- Perform tissue collection from necropsy procedures as necessary.
- Maintain inventory management system/material replenishment system for all veterinary medications and supplies, personal protective equipment (PPE) and other animal use research supplies.
- Responsible for timely and efficient correspondence with the MGH IACUC, and assist with editing research protocols as required by research and regulatory staff.
- Ensuring Annual Reviews and Triennial Reviews of IACUC protocols are completed in a timely manner.
- Provide training for new Researchers and students on animal procedures and IACUC protocol management.
- Assist with animal management and compliance documentation, as needed.
- Work with and provide instructions to CCM staff regarding protocol-specific requirements.
- Perform clinical rounds and ensures that prescribed clinical care is conducted for the research animals as necessary and delegated by researchers.

- Responsible, with program managers, for regular review of animal study charges to ensure they will post to the correct funding source.
- Lead the research team in the post-operative care program for all animals recovering from surgery including administrations of treatments or minor surgical manipulations.
- Maintaining an accurate census of animals held by the Center in MGH animal housing facilities.
- Oversees maintenance of endoscope consoles and other animal research equipment and maintain all documentation required for the performance of the duties stated above. Make endoscopic videos available to research teams.
- Comply with CCM and MGH policies and procedures.
- Assist research staff in ex vivo tissue imaging studies and subsequent histological processing.

- Tolerance to animal environment (non-allergic reactions) is required.Proficient in routine veterinary practices and diagnostic procedures.
- Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency in mathematics pertinent to the duties of the position.
- Computer experience in software such as Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint required.
- Ability to lift and move 60 lbs on a regular basis.
- Long periods of standing.
- Capable of working in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to make decisions regarding veterinary clinical care and to address veterinary emergency situations that arise during the animal studies.
